Golgen by hoevelkamp Golgen by hoevelkamp
Hi @ all.

Long time since my last vertical picture. I was working on this gas giant, put some rings around it and flipped it around, just to see how it was looking. And this was the best looking angle. So I stayed with it and gave it some subtle background and some moons.

This new (for me) technique to create gas giants is working pretty well. This one is definitely the best gas giant I ever created.

Enjoy the view.

Come on, you can give us a hint so we know what direction to go in?

I assume you're talking about the technique? OK. A hint.

Gas Giants have layered, stretched clouds. :D

Thanks synax, actually it's the new improved texture. I put some more work into it to get rid of the repetitive patterns in it. It worked. :D

That planet texture is just to die for man, but iunno, someone about the planet itself still bugs me.... :(

Thanks a lot. About the planet? Not the little moon? Speak your mind my friend.

Iunno, it just feels slightly flat/fake, I can't put my finger on it.

It's a perfect sphere in 3ds max, it doesn't get more round than that. So it's the texture. But I kinda like it, so I leave it as it is. But thanks for the critique. Again something I have to be more careful about in the future. :)

I think it may be the lack of an atmosphere on the upper edges, or i'm just high

My only crit is the moon. WTF? It looks like a marble not a planet. But I guess that is just my opinion.

Brilliant work on the gas giant.

Well, maybe I change the moon. But I really need to know why it looks like a marble to you. Because it's based on Io which looks similar to this. Doesn't it look right because there's no atmosphere?

No, it's not the atmosphere. It's the texture, the colours just don't ... work. It's hard to explain. But I think it is to do with the red, it looks too fake. It is a brilliant piece I'm just not happy with the moon. But if that is the way you like it then so be it. You made it. You are the one that makes the decisions when it comes to that so, I'm not trying to have a go at you. I'm merely critiqueing.

Hey man, no worries. I love getting critiques, I sometimes just wish they were more specific. Actually this one came out right like I intended. So I just leave it as it is. But thanks a lot for clearing it up. :)

What exactly is iffy about the small planet? Is it something I could easily change? Is it because it has no atmosphere? Other than that, thanks a lot. :D

Stop making me jealous with your superiror gas giants :crying: This sure is a very natural, yet dramatic scene, I can tell it would be huge, perhaps bigger than Jupiter itself :wow:

I do this intentionally to piss you off. mwuahaha... Thanks buddy. You noticed the improvements in the cloud maps? No more visible repetitions. Well... no more if you don't look very closely. ;)

It was hard for me to spot the repetivness even on the stock ones, so I can safely say I can't see any here (besides, Jupiter gets "patterns" in it's storms and swirls anyway)

If you ever make a tutorial on this, I won't be complaining lol. Next time I do space art (which may be a while) I might try this anyway :)

A tutorial? Hmmm... not in the near future I'd say. I want to enjoy my "superior" technique a little longer, before I give all my secrets away. ;)

Lol, same reason why I havn't made tutorails yet (well, that and I can't seem to take screenshots on my laptop ) I might need to install all my programs on the home computer for that.

I use a little program for screenshots called "Ashampoo Magical Snap". For that one you would've to pay, but there are similar programs as freeware on the net. You might wanna try that.

Yeah, the home PC can take screenshots. But my windows XP laptop can't. It's never connected to the internet though, so I don't think I'll be downloading anything onto it anytime soon (unless the program can be saved to a USB or disk and tranferred over to install) :plotting:

Maybe try this one. Download with your home pc, save to usb device and install on the laptop. I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Thanks a lot. :) The rings don't stop, they just vanish in the shadow of the gas giant. As seen on many Saturn photos. ;)
