Hi guys,

excruciating 10 hours to render 2500 frames. Hell I need a bigger computer if I want to do this right.

Any tips about reducing render time without quality loss are very very welcome.

Rendered in 3ds Max (64 bit version) with Final Render.

Wanted to render in HD 720p, but the output avi was not with the right aspect ratio. Again, tips about that are very very welcome.

Enjoy!

P.S. I found out that the 64 bit version of Max works with only two codecs, is that right?

P.P.S. Lags in the animation are not intentional. Damn.

Edit: 10 hours later...

I changed some things, fixed some things and think it looks better now. It's a little bit smaller but now with the right aspect ratio, with antialiasing and some other fixes. :)

I have one more edit in mind, but that'll take some time. I'll be away from the 31st this month till the fifth next month, so I might not get this ready before I'm going.

Edit #2: Another 11 hours later...

I was able to put in some more work into this. I added some more details to the gas giant and slowed its rotation a bit down. I also added a simple background. I guess its almost done now.

I wish I had some music to add. Ambient, easy listening, something like that. That would really top this off. Anybody got some music lying around that is not copyrighted and about 1:20 minutes long?

Edit #3: Final update

I added some music.

Music is from [link] Composer: Todd Gautreau, ASCAP
Title: About De Souffle

(if I should not be allowed to use the music this way, let me know and I will take it down)

Geez Hoeve... in a matter of days this work really jumped from "WIP" to a real work of art. I think you did a fantastic job. Makes me wish it were possible to have moving backgrounds - I would love to have this for that situation.

Great job as always.

:D I put some hours into it as well as my computer did. (<- see how it rhymes) :D

Moving backgrounds? I should be able to pull that off in my next animation. I have an idea, just have to think a little more about how I can realize it.

Thanks a lot for the support man, I really appreciate it. :handshake:

Damn! You system is quite a high end system. I have the phenom ii x4 965 at 3.4GHz, 8GB's of DDR3 RAM and the ATI HD 4870 x2. O.o So I think my PC will only be able to cut about 2 hours off your 10 hours. >.<

But any way! I love this, it's so smooth, the music is amazing, it really fits it well. You have inspired me to do more Space 3D animation. :D

Keep up the good work.

I'm planning an upgrade to a phenom II x6 1055T (2.8GHz with only 95W TDP). 6 cores should speed things a little up. I just have to wait for the price announcement to see if I can afford it. The high end phenom II x6 1090T (3.2GHz with 125W TDP) is rumored to be around 350$. So that is out of my range. I made the jump to DirectX 11 with the Sapphire 5770 OC, that's very sweet.

Enough tech-chatter. :D

Thanks a lot and I'd like to see where you will go with Space 3D animation.

If only I waited a bit longer. >.< I made my PC just about 2 months ago. ;)

Well knowing AMD the price for the phenom II x6 1055T will be about 250 to 300 Dollars. I know mine cost 140 Pounds. As for the Graphics Card I was thinking about getting the same one, but two of them.

LOL I know.

You are very welcome! I have done some animation, but it was on my last PC, and it sux. :D I want to try and re-do it.

Like I said, I think my first submission was rejected because it had not the WIP in the title. I changed that, resubmitted it and then it was accepted. I wouldn't send it in twice in hope to get away with something you rejected already. ;)

minor question, the gas giant's rotation is faster than the orbit of the satellite, correct?

Thanks. Shouldn't the rotation of the gas giant be faster?

:iconxeroith:

It depends on many factors, it could be faster because it's gravitationally be held back by something else, could be sped up by being pulled by something else, or locked in sync with the planet by a certain gravitational pull from the planet. So any would be plausible.

Looks great! Having the clouds on a different layer makes it stand out. I would, however, use three or four different layers for the clouds and make them go at different speeds. As it is now it gives the illusion that the clouds are on a transparent sphere that's rotating at a different speed, instead of being clouds moving in the wind. Giving them different speeds would make it look more natural :)

Well, I'm with you. If I dared to render this bigger, you'd see I did exactly that. There's one sphere for the planet itself and there are three different cloud layers and they do move at different speeds, but in this resolution it just is not that good to see. ;)

But there is one more edit coming and it will involve the clouds. :D

Thanks a lot for the input.

very nice :) i personally sugfgest to render to png sequence and then use something like after effects to output to .avi .mpg or anything :)

On the second try (the one now showing) I rendered to jpg sequence and put it together in after effects with H264 which was then converted to Flash so I could upload it here. :) It worked.

Does png have advantages compared to jpg (at 100% quality)?

png is lossless. and can save transparency data.
id never trust a jpeg to hold stuff :P it will always alter the data in some way and thats never a good thing.

"Hell I need a bigger computer if I want to do this right"

You should check to see if that ever program you're using can Network Render

If it can then you'd be better off buying yourself a small Render Farm than a single better Computer

well I use Maya, but I NEVER render avi right out of the box. Just takes to long for maya to render, composite and compress everything. I would suggest doing a batch render (frame by frame). You can easily put it back together in After Effects and you have more post options.

Also, if your render failed at 9, you would have lost it all. Batch render, you can just pic up on what ever frame it left off on.

Also, in After effects, use the H.264 compression. If you find that that compression does not hold your level or curve adjustments, then use quicktime with Mpeg4 compression
