Weekend Racer by hoevelkamp Weekend Racer by hoevelkamp
Hi @ all.

Here's my next one.

Done in 3ds Max and Photoshop. Wasn't so sure about the title. Weekend Warriors? Sunday Driver? Weekend Racer won. :)

The Ships are Stock from DAZ3d. Called Stinger. I only changed a few small things and added the jet trails.

Planet Render was a bit a pain in the ass. 5 lights + ambient to get all the reflections and shadows where I wanted them. Took something like 6h in the original resolution (4096*1862). I just hope the downsizing by dA doesn't cost too much detail. ;)

Greets and enjoy!

Interesting... Is there a story behind that? (short break to google the name) ah, I see. He's that british guy with the show about cars. :D I don't have a tv so the name wasn't familiar. That would have been a good title too.

Thanks a lot Kerem! I think the difference isn't that big. On the other hand why change to another program if you just learned a good one for the job? I just went with max because of all the good sources and tutorials I found on the net. Especially regarding space-art. :)

Really nice (and gives me an idea for a picture I'm working on - actually I finished but I think I'll add some extra space ships - you can never have too many! hehe)...

I'd like to do that. But I'd have to rent a renderfarm to do it. ;) Each frame about 6 hours, that would take like forever. :D

I'm sure that if you cut down the resolution and adjust some render settings you can get a decent rendertime. BTW what renderer did you use? Mentalray? Default scanline? It doesn't look like vray atleast. Oh and what kind of computer do you have?

Yeah, I could get that rendered in 720p maybe. And I used VRay.

My machine from Hell:

CPU: Phenom X4 9750
MB: Gigabyte MA78G-DS3H
Graphic: Club 3d Radeon 3850 HD
RAM: 6GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 (2x2GB + 2x1GB)

Heh. Okay it was v-ray :) If you need any rendering assistance I have a C2Q 9400(3,5ghz) which is currently already rendering but should be available by the end of this week.

Thanks a lot for the offer. Beast you got there. I guess it renders like a lightning bolt. :D I'm working on another animation right now. Have to learn it as I go. Till now all I did was stills, not animated stuff. But it's fun. :)

the ship looks pretty cool, a tad bit toy-like, but oh well, still good :ufo: the palnet looks amazing as usual, I never would have guessed so many lights were rquired, I thought it was always just one to simulate the real life effect of just one Sun on the planet :D the clouds and their shadows add a wealth of depth, though they are kinda the same formation and distribution all over and some large-scale variations in cloud types and thickness/coverage probably would have looked nice :floating: but very realistic overall, I wouldn't bother waiting for that render again

Thanks a lot! About the lights. There's two lights that shine on the landmasses (gives a more soft transition from light to shadow), two lights for the reflections and oceans and one light for the cloud shadows. Plus the overall ambient lighting. About the clouds. I realised the too uniform look when the render was in the fourth hour or so. What I wanted to do was use one map like it is shown above + one map with bigger clouds. Well, maybe if I feel like it I'll give my machine this other version this night. :D
